Redear Sunfish Lepomis microlophus (G√ľnther, 1859)Synonyms: Shellcracker.

Description:

Note the softer forehead slope, far less blunt than close relatives the Bluegill and Pumpkinseed. The mouth is also larger and longer on these fish, which likely makes them more adept at maneuvering and cracking the shells they use on their beds. (J. Corcoran, pers. comm.)
