Kingdom Animalia   >   Phylum Chordata   >   Class Amphibia   >   Order Anura   >   Family Ranidae   >   Genus Lithobates

Status:

Pickerel Frog (Lithobates palustris) is a medium-sized spotted frog species, rather similar in pattern to a leopard frog. Unlike leopard frogs, the paired dark spots of Pickerel are more square-shaped or rectangular. There is a diagnostic bright yellow patch on the inner surface of the hind legs, dorsolateral ridges reaching to the groin, and a conspicuous pale streak on the upper lip. This frog is at home in cooler waters of boggy or swampy habitats, and riparian corridors. The call is a short, quiet snoring sound (Conant & Collins, 1998). Pickerel Frogs are distributed throughout Maryland.

There are 254 records in the project database.
