Bold-based Zale / Intent Zale Zale lunifera/intenta (Hübner, 1818) / (Walker, [1858])     Synonyms: Hodges #8713, Hodges #8713.1.
Kingdom Animalia   >   Phylum Arthropoda   >   Class Insecta   >   Order Lepidoptera   >   Family Erebidae   >   Genus Zale

Status:

"Zale lunifera was split into two species in 2010. The name "lunifera" applies to a species restricted to scrub oak barrens east and south of the Appalachians, while the common widespread species is now called Zale intenta." (BugGuide, 2011)

With a little research and factoring in range and habitat, we should be able to ID most of our specimens to species, but for now we're treating this split on one page.

Where to find:

"Z. intenta probably occurs state-wide with Z. lunifera occurring where there are Scrub Oak along the coast in pine barrens" (H. McGuinness, pers. comm.).

There are 17 records in the project database.
